Twelve

As if on cue, as Abby grabbed Jordan’s hand, the band struck up a new tune with the sensual quality that marked it as a tango. Abby couldn’t hold back her sly smile as she pulled Jordan onto the dance floor. She couldn’t have planned the timing better if she’d had a million dollars on her to bribe the band leader. They had chosen the perfect song for seduction, which was exactly what Abby had in mind. That was once in a lifetime luck, the kind money couldn’t buy.

“What’s that smile for?” Jordan asked. Her steps becoming hesitant the closer they got to the middle of the floor, and Abby felt a thrill of satisfaction at the woman’s nervousness.

“Oh, nothing. You know what? I think we can start right here.” Abby stopped and took Jordan into a starting position that was appropriate for a tango, placing her right hand firmly on the small of Jordan’s back and taking Jordan’s right hand with her left, stretching that arm out to the side until it was fully extended.

Jordan rested her left hand clumsily on Abby’s shoulder. “Hey, this doesn’t feel right. I think you’ve got it backward.”

“No, I’ve got it exactly right,” Abby informed her sweetly, though she was pretty sure Jordan could hear the triumph underneath. “I’ll be taking the lead this time.”

Abby pulled Jordan closer, their bodies pressed together from chest to hip. Though Jordan was taller, Abby angled her head so she could look her in the eyes. She stepped forward with her left foot, and Jordan took a step back with her right. When Abby stepped forward with her right, Jordan responded by stepping back on her left. She repeated this a few more times, staying in sync with the music, then threw in a hesitation step to see what would happen. Jordan followed along without missing a beat, their bodies moving in perfect unison

“Nicely done.” Abby fixed her with a smoldering look, hoping to show Jordan just how attractive she found her, but the conflicted look she saw reflected back in Jordan’s eyes surprised her. “What is it? You seem troubled by something. You’re not still thinking about Lucy, are you?”

“No…no, of course not.”

“Because you have no reason to worry. You’re a natural at the tango.” But even as she said it, Abby sensed that Jordan’s hesitation went beyond a lack of confidence at being able to execute a few dance moves. Something else was going on. “What’s really going on?”

“Nothing.”

“You know, I had a dance teacher in high school who used to say that when you’re dancing, it’s impossible to lie.”

“Your high school had dance classes?” Jordan smirked. “What kind of la-di-da school did you go to, anyway?”

“It was my gym class!” Though it was true that she’d gone to an exclusive private school, thanks to her father’s money, Jordan’s teasing made her feel the need to defend herself. “It was nothing special. Every high school in California offered classes like that.”

“Well. California.” Jordan said it as though the state alone had proven her point.
